Tuesday JunKAction & The Tree of Beer Cans
Weekly
January 2022 to March 2023.
South Norwood, Belgrave Car Park
Tuesday JunKAction’s sessions were happening in different locations in South Norwood, including the Belgrave Car Park, just a few steps from Norwood Junction station. Belgrave Car Park is a residential area that suffers immensely from litter, mostly beer cans. There is a long history of disputes between residents, local councillors and the police about the prevention of drinking alcohol in the street. We decided to create a public sculpture to celebrate our achievements with Tuesday JunKAction and to highlight the problems at the car park.
The Tree of Beers is an installation set just in the middle of Belgrave Car Park; a tree covered with over one thousand beer cans that have been collected in the area.
The cans are threaded onto wire and loosely wrapped around the tree, spread out through the upper and lower branches.
The Three of Beer Cans wasn’t aimed at a solution, yet its artistic purpose serves to raise questions and expressions of doubt on our failures as a collective while we desire to create change. How can we expect to protect nature if we fail to support and understand the issues that affect individuals in our community?
This project was made possible thanks to the generous support of WELOVESE25 and our wonderfully dedicated volunteers.
